Public Art Production : Enjoy Centre
StArts Fest Location: St. Albert Place, St. Albert, AB
The main focus for the piano is sunflowers, small and large, scattered throughout the piano surface. The ” Garden” will have other colorful flowers and leaves surrounding the sunflowers. Dragonflies and butterflies will fly in and around the garden complementing the rest of the scene. The sky will be done with pieces of mirror and acrylic paint.
The technique I work in is mixed media mosaics. This means that I cut or break up traditional mosaic materials like stained glass, glass tiles, vitreous glass, smalti, and marble but also incorporate found materials such as sea glass, ceramic pieces, wire, jewelry, glass beads, stones, and anything else that ”works” in to my mosaic art.
Helen enjoyed a very satisfying career as an Art teacher with the Edmonton Public School Board from 1970-2001. In addition to having University courses in drawing, painting, printmaking, photography, and Art History, Helen has continually expanded her art skills by taking watercolour workshops in Oregon and Qualicum Beach, art welding classes at Red Deer College, clay workshops and classes at U of A Extension, and numerous other workshops in stained glass, cement, ice carving, and styrofoam sculpture.
Following her retirement, Helen pursued her love of art mainly in the area of sculpture. She joined the Sculptor’s Association of Alberta and through this association, has been involved in many sculpture projects in Edmonton. During a trip to San Diego in 2001, Helen discovered the mosaic sculpture of Niki de Saint Phalle, a French/American artist. Since then, Helen has taught herself the art of mosaic through observation and reference books. Mosaics have become her signature art.
